MEETINGS are an opportunity to learn and grow in your knowledge of how to help others become life long readers with research based ideas and engaging activities. Educators can earn 1 CEU by attending all meetings.

YOUNG AUTHORS is a terrific opportunity for Craven and Pamlico Counties to share their very talented writers with our community and state. It is a wonderful experience for students when they become a local council winner or even a state winner! See more in the drop down menu Young Authors.

READING FUN DAY is our opportunity to invite the families of our  community to four hours of fun and engaging literacy activities at the New Bern Mall on a cold February day outside, but warm and invigorating inside. See more in the drop down menu Reading Fun Day.

PROJECT GRANT-Literacy Bags for Children in Foster Care
Twin Rivers Council project for 2016-2017 is to show meaningful support for approximately 90 Craven County children in foster care by presenting them with literacy focused gift bags. Content of the bags will include age appropriate books, journals and school supplies.  Contributions of new and gently used books, composition books and journals, pencils, pens, erasers, and other school supplies will come from the 200 plus council members and funds raised by Twin Rivers participation in the biannual Belk Charity Days events. Members will share in the “hands on” assembling of the gift bags at the council’s final meeting of the year, April 27, 2017 (usually attended by 50 or more members). Children will receive their bag at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, containing items suitable for their age level, through their Craven County Department of Social Services agent.  Bags will have tags on them indicating the gift is from the Twin Rivers Council of the North Carolina Reading Association, an affiliate of the International Literacy Association.  It is the goal of Twin Rivers Council to help comfort and inspire children facing challenges beyond their control. By giving them these literacy tools toward becoming a successful reader and /or writer, Twin Rivers Council is showing them that we and the community care greatly about them and their future.

CELEBRATE LITERACY AWARD-
The Celebrate Literacy Award recognizes organizations, institutions, and individuals that have made significant literacy contributions at the local, state, or provincial level. The hope is that the celebration will familiarize the public with literacy activities in the community and call attention to the work that is being done by the schools and the International Literacy Association to promote literacy worldwide.

HONOR COUNCIL has been awarded to Twin Rivers Council for the past 24 years. Read more about what is required to receive this award in the drop down menu Honor Council.
